Computer technology is constantly evolving, and it is important for computer professionals to stay on top of the latest programs and improvements, and it is also key to be able to prove to employers, clients and peers that one is both current and fluent in new technology. Having a computer tech certification is one way to demonstrate a personal commitment to one’s career and the information technology field.
Computer tech certifications are available in many areas of computers, including computer skills, computer programming, networking and even in Microsoft programs. All certifications are earned by passing a certification exam. Most certifications also have education and professional eligibility requirements as well.
Computer Skills
There are few job positions available today that do not require at least some basic possession of computer skills. Earning certification in computer skills can help one stand out from the competition.
Computer skills certifications are available for nearly every type of computer task imaginable. Candidates can pursue certification in using Adobe programs, networking skills, web coding, web design, web development, Internet security, project management and much, much more. Every certification exam is different, but most exams will be computerized and require the candidate to demonstrate their skills by responding to particular requests.

Computer Programming
Certifications for computer programmers include vendor certifications, which are those specific to corporate products, such as Novell, IBM or Microsoft, and general programming certifications, which are more specific to programming languages or can be tailored to a student’s particular interests combining programs and languages.

Networking
A networking certification is used to demonstrate that one is appropriately skilled and knowledgeable about building and maintain corporate computer networks. Certification exams are offered by product manufacturers, such as Cisco or Novell, and professional organizations, such as EMC Information Intelligence Group.
Certification exams vary greatly in content, length and price. Networking professionals will be able to find certification programs and exams for every skill level, from beginner to novice, and certification is something that can be pursued and maintained throughout one’s networking career. Most networking certification exams are offered at national testing centers, such as Pearson VUE or Prometric.

Microsoft
Microsoft has a certification program for computer users of all levels, from students to high-level technology professionals. Each certification is earned through an exam, and Microsoft offers four exam levels: specialist, professional, master and architect. Each level has an experience and education requirement, and each level builds upon knowledge and skills demonstrated in the previous certification level.
Certification tests are offered in all of Microsoft’s programs, including Office, SQL Server, Windows Server and Exchange Server. Each exam includes a $125 registration fee. While exam formats and length are not disclosed because of security concerns, no test lasts longer than four hours. All exams are offered at Prometric and Certiport test centers worldwide.
