Washington Electrician Exam
Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in Washington.
Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries.
Qualifications Needed to Receive a License
Master Electrician: A candidate must have held a journeyman certificate with the Department of Labor and Industry for at least 4 years.
Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have 8,000 hours’ experience as an electrical trainee with 4,000 hours spent working in commercial or industrial installation or equivalent verified training or experience in the U.S. military.
Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

Test Content
Master Electrician Exam - The electrical contractor exam consists of the following:
- NEC & Theory: 80 questions, 4 hours
- WA Codes: 20 questions, 1 hour
- Major Load Calculations: 10 questions, 2 hours
A candidate needs at least a 70% grade to pass.
Journeyman Electrician Exam - The journeyman exam consists of the following:
- NEC & Theory: 60 questions, 3 hours
- WA Codes: 17 questions, 1 hour
A candidate needs at least at 70% grade to pass.

License Renewal Requirements: Licenses must be renewed every three years by the licensee’s date of birth.
