Electrician Practice

Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in Vermont.

Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Vermont Division of Fire Safety.

Qualifications Needed to Receive a License

Master Electrician: A candidate must have been licensed as a journeyman electrician for at least two years or have had comparable experience and training.

Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have completed a verified apprenticeship (including both instruction and practice) or equivalent training and experience.

Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

How to Apply for a License: A candidate for licensure must complete/send an application to the Vermont Divison of Fire Safety.

Test Content

Master Electrician Exam - The electrical contractor exam consists of 105 questions with a time limit of 5 hours.

The exam covers the following subject areas:

  • General Knowledge
  • 2014 National Electrical Code Services and Service Equipment
  • 2011 State of Vermont Electrical Safety Rules Feeders
  • Branch Circuits and Conductors
  • Wiring Methods and Materials
  • Equipment and Devices
  • Control Devices
  • Motors and Generators
  • Special Occupancies, Equipment, and Conditions
  • Local Amendments

Journeyman Electrician Exam - The journeyman exam consists of 90 questions with a time limit of 4 hours.

The exam covers the following subject areas:

  • General Knowledge
  • 2014 National Electrical Code Services and Service Equipment
  • 2011 State of Vermont Electrical Safety Rules Feeders
  • Branch Circuits and Conductors
  • Wiring Methods and Materials
  • Equipment and Devices
  • Control Devices
  • Motors and Generators
  • Special Occupancies, Equipment, and Conditions
  • Local Amendments

Fees: There is an examination fee.

Who Administers the Test: The testing information and registration forms will be sent to you once your application is approved by the Board.

License Renewal Requirements: Licenses must be renewed every three years on a date designated by the board.
