Electrician Practice

Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in ­­North Dakota.

Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the North Dakota State Electrical Board.

Qualifications Needed to Receive a License

Electrical Contractor: A candidate must have two years’ experience as a journeyman electrician or four years’ experience as a Class “B” electrician. A candidate must make a deposit pledge of $10,000 up front and pay a $50 yearly undertaking fee after that. The candidate must also have public liability insurance in accordance with state regulations.

Master Electrician: A candidate must have five years’ experience, one year of which must be as a journeyman electrician. The candidate must also pass a written examination. A bond of $3,000 to the state is required; in addition, a $25 deposit must be made to the Board in lieu of a surety bond.

Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have four years’ experience and pass a written examination. Courses at an approved trade school may count as up to one year of experience.

Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

Test Content

Journeyman Exam – The journeyman exam covers all chapters of the 2017 National Electrical Code and the current Laws, Rules & Wiring Standards. A candidate needs at least a 70% grade to pass.

Class B Electrician Exam - The Class B Electrician exam covers all chapters of the 2017 National Electrical Code and the current Laws, Rules & Wiring Standards. A candidate needs at least a 70% grade to pass.

Fees: There is an examination fee.

Who Administers the Test: North Dakota State Electrical Board.

License Renewal Requirements: A licensed electrician needs a minimum of 8 hours of continuing education per year, 4 of which must be code.
