Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the State of New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (“NJREC”).
Qualifications to receive a License: A candidate must complete 75 clock hours of study at an NJREC-approved real estate school (search schools here), pass a school-administered final exam, and pass a state exam. All candidates must submit a full set of fingerprints, and pass a background check. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age, and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Applying for the Exams: Upon completion of the 75-hour pre-licensure course, the course provider electronically transmits the candidate's eligibility to PSI. Upon PSI's receipt of the eligibility information on a candidate, that candidate is deemed eligible to register for the exam. Test Content: The New Jersey state real estate licensing exam is comprised of two separate portions, the national portion and the state-specific portion. The questions are intermixed, and the exam does not label each question as national or state-specific. Five to ten (disbursed throughout the exam) are considered "experimental" questions and are not scored. All questions are multiple choice format with four answer choices provided for each question. Test takers are allotted 4 hours to complete each test. A score of at least 70% (77 correct out of 110) is required to pass. The exam is presented in a computer-based format, but accommodations for paper-based tests and/or oral testing can be provided with special arrangements.
The national portion of the test consists of 80 questions, and tests the candidate's knowledge of general real estate concepts, including the following subject areas:

How to Apply for the License: The license application is issued by the testing company upon passing both portions of the licensing exam. Candidates must provide NJREC with the following documents: (1) completed application and application fee; (2) original New Jersey state real estate licensing exam score report(s); (3) certificate issued by an NJREC-approved school for completion of the 75-hour salesperson pre-licensure curriculum; and (4) a copy of the applicant’s completed Universal Form (IDG_NJAPP_110113) and payment receipt from the fingerprinting vendor. All of the required documents must be submitted to NJREC within one year from the completion of the pre-licensure course.

License Renewal Requirements – A New Jersey real estate licensee must take 12 credit hours of continuing education (either online or in the classroom) from an NJREC-approved provider every two years. Search providers here. Further information is provided on the NJREC website, here and here.
