MBLEx Review
an exerpt from The Practice Exam Kit for the MBLEx
In the United States, 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands require that massage therapists be licensed to practice massage therapy within their borders. The purpose of massage therapy licensing is primarily to protect the public, so that unqualified practitioners cannot legally practice massage therapy.
To obtain a license, most states have both an educational requirement and an exam requirement to ensure that licensees meet a minimal standard. Of the states and territories that require licensure, all but three require that applicants take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx). The MBLEx is the only national massage therapy license examination in the United States.
Who Can Take the MBLEx
To be eligible to take the MBLEx, candidates must meet certain requirements. They must complete an application to take the exam, verify that their education meets the FSMTB requirements, have their educational record sent directly to the FSMTB from the school they attended, agree in writing to abide by the FSMTB policies, and pay the required fee.
For an applicant to be approved to take the MBLEx, they must either be currently enrolled in an approved massage therapy program and have received education in all areas of the test or have graduated from an approved massage therapy program. The FSMTB defines an “approved” program as one that is recognized by the state board or agency that regulates massage in the state where the school is located.
