Hawaii Electrician Exam
To get licensed in Hawaii, electricians are required to take an exam that covers such subjects as circuits, conductors, grounding, lighting and safety. Whether you live in Honolulu or another city or county, the resources below will help you get started on the path to receive your electrician's license.
Need of a License: Electrical contractors and journeyman electrician, including some specialty electricians, need a license to work in Hawaii.
Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Hawaii Contractor’s License Board and the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Professional and Vocational Licensing.
Qualifications and Exam requirements
Electrical Contractor C-13
- Must pass the Business and Law (Part I) and Trade Specific (Part II) exam.
- 5 years of experience for a journey worker and an extended 2 years for a master license
- Credit report covering the previous 5 years on each individual applicant
- A current financial statement prepared and signed by a CPA
- A current state tax clearance from the Dept. of Taxation
- Certificate of insurance for worker's compensation and certificate from their insurer showing liability coverage for: Property damage- $50,000 per occurrence and Bodily Injury- $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence.
Journey Worker Electrician
- 5 years but not less than 10,000 hours of all aspect of electrical wiring work primarily involved in residential and commercial wiring and
- Effective July, 2013 satisfactory completion accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study of 240 hours of electrical academic coursework.
Supervising Electrician: Four (4) years experience as a licensed journey worker electrician or equivalent
Journey Worker Industrial Electrician: Five (5) years but no less than 10,000 hours of industrial wiring work
Supervising Industrial Electrician: Four (4) years experience as a licensed journey worker industrial electrician or equivalent
Maintenance Electrician: One (1) year electrical maintenance wiring work or two years electrical trade schooling
For supervising or master categories, equivalent experience in the trade means having been licensed as a journey worker or supervising level electrician for at least four years or a journey worker or master level in another county, state, or country where requirements for licensure are equivalent to those in force in this State.
How to Apply for the License
To obtain an Electrical Contractor C-13 license, an application must be filed.
To work as a Journeyman Electrician, you must file an application to get a license.

License Renewal Requirements:
Electrical Contractor C-13: Biennial, by September 30 of even numbered years.
Journey Worker Electrician: Triennial
Applicable Regulations: Counties review plans and specifications, issue permits, conduct inspections, and enforce the electrical codes.
