Need of a License: A real estate salesperson must be licensed by the state of Connecticut to represent clients in the sale or purchase of real estate that is located in Connecticut.
Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (“CDCP”). 
Qualifications to receive a License: Prior to taking the state licensing exam, a candidate for a Connecticut real estate license must use the form at the end of the Salesperson Real Estate Licensing Candidate Information Bulletin to apply to take the state licensing exam. A candidate must show proof of completion of a 60 clock-hours course of study at a CDCP-approved real estate school (search "Real Estate Pre-licensing Provider" here). Upon showing proof of the required course of study, the candidate receives an Examination Eligibility Postcard from the testing organization (PSI). Applying for the Exams: Candidates should create an account with PSI, and apply to take the state exam through the PSI website scheduling page.
Test Content: The Connecticut state real estate licensing exam is comprised of two separate tests, the national test and the state-specific test. Five questions on the national test and five questions on the state-specific test are considered "experimental" questions and are not scored. Both portions are comprised of multiple choice questions with four answer choices provided for each question. Test takers are allotted 120 minutes to complete the national test, and 45 minutes to complete the state test. A score of at least 70% is required to pass. The exam is presented in a computer-based format, but accommodations for paper-based tests and/or oral testing can be provided with special arrangements.
The national test consists of 85 questions (80 are scored, 5 are not scored) and tests the candidate's knowledge of general real estate concepts, including the following subject areas:
Property Ownership
Land Use Controls and Regulations
Valuation and Market Analysis
Financing
Laws of Agency
Mandated Disclosures
Contracts
Transfer of Title
Practice of Real Estate
Real Estate Calculations
Specialty Areas (such as property management, tenancies, subdivisions, common interest properties, etc.)
The state specific test consists of 35 questions (30 are scored, 5 are not scored) and tests the candidate's knowledge of the state-specific concepts, including the following subject areas:
Connecticut Real Estate Commission and Licensing Requirements
Connecticut Laws Governing the Activities of Licensees
Connecticut Real Estate Agency
Connecticut-Specific Real Estate Principles and Practices
How to Apply for the License: The application for licensure is presented to the candidate upon passing both portions of the state licensing exam. Instructions for license application, including an itemized list of required documents, an itemized list of applicable fees, and instructions for submittal are on the application. Documents that the candidate submits with the application include (but are not limited to) the following: (1) completed application and application fee; (2) original Connecticut state real estate licensing exam score report(s); (3) certificate issued by a CDCP-approved school for completion of the 60-hour salesperson pre-licensure curriculum. All of the required documents must, within two years of passing the last portion of the exam, be submitted to the Licensing Services Division of the CDCP at the following address:

License Renewal Requirements: A Connecticut real estate licensee must take 12 credit hours of continuing education (either online or in the classroom) from a CDCP-approved provider every two years. Further information is provided on the CDCP website, here.
Applicable Regulations: Real estate licensees in Connecticut are regulated under Chapter 392, Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons, and the Connecticut Administrative Code, Section 20.
