Alaska Electrician Exam
To get licensed in Alaska, electricians are required to take an exam that covers such subjects as circuits, conductors, grounding, lighting and safety. Need of a License
Electrical Contractor
Contractors must be registered with the Department of Community & Economic Development and must also be, or have in their employ, a person currently licensed as an electrical administrator.
Electrician
The Department of Labor and Workforce Development issues license upon passage of an examination for journeyman electrician, journeyman power lineman, residential electrician, maintenance electrician, and apprentice/learner. There is a requirement to have 8000 hours of experience in the trade.

Qualifications and Exam Requirements
Electrical Administrator: Unlimited Commercial Wiring (UCW) - Inside Communications (IC)- Residential Wiring (RW) - Outside Communications (OC)- Controls and Control Wiring (CNTL) - Unlimited Line Work Outside (UL)
Requirements: Practical experience as a journeyman lineman in outside linework for at least 4of the 6 years immediately before the date of application;
- construction management experience in outside linework
- a degree in electrical engineering plus practical experience as a journeyman lineman or field engineer
- a registration in the state as a professional electrical engineer plus management experience or
- experience as a journeyman lineman in outside linework for three of the six years immediately before the date of application and
- 1 year as a certified electrical inspector for a state or municipality;
- 1 year as a full-time electrical instructor at an approved college, university, or trade school or
- Completion of a curriculum related to outside linework at an approved college, university, or trade school.
Electrical Journeyman: Electricians are regulated by the Department of Labor, Labor Standards and Safety, Mechanical Inspection Section.
- 8000 hours work experience subject to the NEC
- A minimum of 6000 hours must be commercial/industrial. A maximum of 2000 hours may be residential. A maximum of 1000 hours of trade-related classroom training and/or 1000 hours of power lineman experience may be part of the 8000 hours requirement. No maintenance hours apply.
Electrical Journeyman Residential Certificate of Fitness:
- Minimum of 4000 hours of work in the trade.
- Up to 500 hours of trade-related classroom training can be substituted for 500 hours of the 4000 hours requirement. This license allows the holder to act as a journeyman on residential sites only. The holder will be a trainee on commercial sites. No maintenance hours apply.
Lineman Journeyman Certificate of Fitness:
- Minimum of 8000 hours work experience subject to the National Electrical Safety Code.
- Up to 1000 trade-related classroom hours and/or up to 1000 hours of experience as an electrician may be substituted to meet the work experience requirement
How to Apply for the License
Electrical Administrator: There’s an application to file to work as an electrical administrator. You do not need approval from the State of Alaska to take the examination. Examination results are valid for one year.
Journeyman Electrician: You have to file an application to work as a journeyman electrician.
Who administers the test: Electrical Administrator License examinations in Alaska will be conducted by PSI Exams (800) 733-9267. Examination details are currently being finalized. Scheduling and examination content information will be posted once it is available.
Exams are given by appointment only. Call the Mechanical Inspection office in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau to schedule an appointment. Note: Contact the Anchorage office for information on testing in other selected Alaska communities.
Test Details
There is a 4 hour time limit on all exams. Electrical Journeyman and Electrical Residential exams are Open Book. The passing grade is 70%.
Fees: There are fees to obtain a license.
License Renewal Requirements

Electrical Administrator: Biennial licenses expire odd years on December 31.
Journeyman Electrician: Biennial on the date of issue.
