Alabama Electrician Exam
To get licensed in Alabama, electricians are required to take an exam that covers such subjects as circuits, conductors, grounding, lighting and safety. Need of a License: Electrical contractors and state-wide journeyman electricians need a license to work in Alabama.
Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the Alabama Electrical Contractor’s Board. 
Qualifications needed to receive a License: A candidate for the journeyman license must have at least 8,000 hours or 4 years of experience in installation of electrical wiring and apparatus or equipment for lighting or power including controls. A candidate can substitute up to 2,000 hours or 1 year of the 8,000 hour/ 4 year requirement with approved education or apprenticeship programs.
A candidate for the electrical contractor license must have at least 8,000 hours in overall design, layout, planning and supervision of electrical construction activities. The 8,000 hour requirement may be satisfied by working as a journeyman in charge for the requisite time period. A candidate for electrical contractor can substitute up to 2,000 hours of the 8,000 hour requirement with approved education or apprenticeship programs.
Exam Requirement: A candidate for either the electrical contractor license or the journeyman license must pass a state electrical exam to get a license. Passage of an approved national exam, taken in Alabama, may satisfy the exam requirement. More information can be found in a Candidate Handbook.

Electrical Contractor Exam - The electrical contractor exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions. Test takers have 5 hours to complete exam. The exam is open-book with authorized materials and computer based.
